Self Hosted WordPress Development
Your code, your data, your choice of host, with none of it locked inside a platform's plan tier.
Self hosted WordPress means the software runs on infrastructure you actually control, not a platform that decides which plugins you are allowed to install or what happens to your content if you want to leave. NextEnvision builds and migrates self hosted WordPress sites for agencies and businesses across Australia, the United Kingdom and Singapore, on whichever hosting environment fits, not one we happen to resell.
The Plugin the Platform Would Not Allow
A business on WordPress.com’s Business plan needed a specific inventory sync plugin to connect their site to a warehouse system. The plan tier did not support arbitrary plugin installation, so the option was either upgrade to a more expensive tier that still did not guarantee compatibility, or find a workaround that never quite worked the way the integration actually needed to. Three months of back and forth later, they were no closer to a working sync, and the monthly platform fee had not gone down.
This is the tradeoff a hosted platform makes on your behalf. WordPress.com, Wix and Squarespace bundle hosting, updates and a curated plugin ecosystem into one convenient product, and that convenience comes with a ceiling on what you can actually build. Self hosted WordPress removes the ceiling entirely, because the software, the plugins and the hosting environment are all under your control, not a platform’s release schedule.
Self Hosted WordPress Services for Agencies and Businesses
Six areas we handle when moving a site to self hosted WordPress, from platform migration through to full ownership handover.
Migration from WordPress.com to Self Hosted
Migration from Wix, Squarespace or Shopify
Hosting Infrastructure Selection and Setup
Full Plugin and Theme Freedom Setup
Source Code and Data Ownership Handover
Self Hosted Security Hardening
Host Agnostic, Genuinely Portable
Some agencies sell self hosted WordPress but quietly bundle it with their own proprietary hosting stack, which recreates the same lock-in problem under a different name. We build on standard, documented infrastructure using the official WordPress.org software, so the resulting site runs on any competent host and is never dependent on our infrastructure to keep functioning.
The second half of the approach is treating the handover as real, not symbolic. A Git repository with full commit history, database credentials and a written runbook are provided at project completion. If you never contact us again after handover, the site should keep running exactly as designed, because ownership was never contingent on an ongoing relationship.

White Label Self Hosted WordPress Migrations for Agencies
Agencies bring us clients who have outgrown a hosted platform and need a migration handled with minimal disruption to search rankings and existing integrations. We run the technical migration and infrastructure setup under your agency’s brand, with your client seeing only your team’s name on the project.
Migrations are scoped around URL preservation and downtime minimisation, since a botched platform switch can cost more in lost rankings than the migration itself. Every deliverable, including white label documentation, is written as though your team executed it directly.
Two Failure Patterns We See With Hosted Platforms
The first is the integration ceiling. A business grows past whatever a platform’s curated plugin list can support, whether that is a custom inventory sync, a specific payment gateway or a membership structure the platform simply does not offer. The only paths forward are an expensive workaround or a migration that should have happened months earlier, before the business built more content on top of a platform it was already outgrowing.
The second is the incomplete export. A business decides to leave a hosted platform and discovers the export tool drops custom fields, breaks internal links or strips metadata the search engine had already indexed. What looked like a portable WordPress export turns into a partial content dump that still needs significant rebuilding. If you are weighing a move off a hosted platform, book a discovery call before you start exporting anything.

Self Hosted WordPress FAQ
Specific questions agencies and businesses ask before moving to self hosted WordPress.
What does self hosted WordPress actually mean versus WordPress.com?
Self hosted WordPress means you install the free WordPress.org software on hosting infrastructure of your choosing, whether that is a managed WordPress host, a cloud VPS or dedicated servers. You control the plugins, themes and custom code that run on the site with no platform review process gatekeeping what you can install. WordPress.com, by contrast, is a hosted product that bundles the software with its own infrastructure and a plan-tiered restriction on plugins, custom code and, on lower tiers, even your own domain and branding.
Can you migrate our site from Wix or Squarespace to self hosted WordPress?
Yes. Wix and Squarespace do not use WordPress content structures, so this is closer to a rebuild than a straightforward export and import, but we preserve URL structure, page content and SEO metadata wherever the source platform’s export makes that possible. Anything the export drops, such as certain custom layouts or interactive elements, is rebuilt natively in WordPress rather than approximated with a workaround.
Do we need our own hosting account or do you provide it?
Either works. We can set up and configure hosting on a provider you already have an account with, recommend and provision a host that fits your requirements, or hand you a fully documented setup guide if your team prefers to manage the hosting relationship directly. What we do not do is lock the build to a proprietary hosting stack you cannot move away from later.
Will we truly own the code and data after the build?
Yes. You receive a Git repository with full commit history for any custom theme or plugin code, direct database access and complete documentation at project completion. If you never engage us again, the site continues running exactly as built, since ownership is not contingent on an ongoing support relationship. This is the core difference between a genuine self hosted handover and a platform migration that just moves you to a different vendor’s walled garden.
Is self hosted WordPress more work to maintain than a hosted platform?
It shifts responsibility rather than necessarily adding more of it. A hosted platform handles updates and security patching for you, but restricts what you can build. Self hosted WordPress requires someone to manage updates, backups and security, which is exactly what our managed WordPress care plans cover if you would rather not run that yourself. Many businesses pair a self hosted build with a managed care plan, and we can scope that alongside the migration during a discovery call.
Can you host it or do we need to choose our own host?
We can recommend hosting based on your traffic, budget and technical requirements, or work with a host you have already chosen. We are not tied to reselling a single hosting product, so the recommendation is based on what actually fits your project rather than what pays us a referral commission. If your requirements change later, the site is portable to a different host without a rebuild.
